But what sets them apart is their artistry: each arrangement is treated with respect\, passion\, and technical excellence. \nMariachi Los Gavilanes has performed for civic events\, cultural festivals\, private celebrations\, and dignitaries across Texas. At Come and Take It\, they bring heritage to the heart of Gonzales — where audiences of all ages are invited to tap their feet\, sing along\, and celebrate the enduring joy of mariachi music. \n🇲🇽 What to Expect on Saturday \nExpect a vibrant\, family-friendly set filled with traditional mariachi classics\, stunning instrumental solos\, rich vocal harmonies\, and an atmosphere of pure celebration. During Come and Take It weekend\, this beautiful two-story Victorian home opens its doors for public tours\, showcasing handcrafted furniture\, preserved architectural features\, and stories spanning over a century of Texas life. \nThe home\, originally built in 1885\, offers a unique glimpse into post-Civil War Texas. Many of the pieces inside were created by J.B. Wells Jr. himself — including mantles\, lighting\, and even replicas of the Alamo and historic ships. Each room tells a story of family\, craftsmanship\, and regional pride. \n🏛️ Highlights from the Tour \nDownstairs: \n\n\nA 10-foot pier glass framed in river-bottom walnut \n\n\nOriginal wallpaper and curtains from the 1800s \n\n\nA Tiffany lamp that’s been in the family since 1910 \n\n\nMantles made from repurposed organs and walnut beds with trundle frames \n\n\nUpstairs: \n\n\nMassive walnut furniture from Texas cabinet makers \n\n\nAntique washstands and mirrors in the “dolphin’s tail” style \n\n\nArtifacts and photos from family members who served in three wars \n\n\n📍 Location + Parking \nThe JB Wells House is located just 5 driving minutes east of Independence Square at 829 Mitchell Street. There is limited on-site parking\, but overflow parking is available along Mitchell and St. Andrew Streets. Feel the cannon thunder. Witness the moment Texas stood its ground.\nThe annual Battle of Gonzales Reenactment brings to life the historic clash that marked the official beginning of the Texas Revolution. In October 1835\, settlers in Gonzales refused to return a cannon loaned to them by the Mexican government — instead raising a handmade flag with a black star\, a sketch of the cannon\, and four legendary words: “Come and Take It.” \nWhat followed was a standoff between approximately 140 Texian militia and Mexican dragoons\, culminating in a pre-dawn skirmish that lasted mere hours but changed the course of history. Though the battle resulted in few casualties\, its impact was immeasurable. The resolve of the Texians to resist disarmament ignited a wider rebellion\, and Gonzales became known as the “Lexington of Texas” — the symbolic birthplace of Texas independence. \nThrough this dynamic reenactment\, costumed interpreters and historical combat demonstrations recreate the drama and courage of that pivotal moment\, complete with musket fire\, cannon blasts\, and immersive storytelling. \n🏛️ Explore Pioneer Village \nWhile you’re here\, take time to explore Pioneer Village\, a living history museum dedicated to preserving the daily life of early Texas settlers. Nestled on wooded acreage just north of downtown Gonzales\, the village features original 19th-century buildings—including a blacksmith shop\, homes\, barns\, a church\, and more—each furnished with authentic artifacts and period tools. \nDocents and volunteers offer hands-on demonstrations and guided tours throughout the weekend. From washboard laundry to butter churning and frontier cooking\, every corner of the village invites you to step back in time and experience Texas as it was. It’s the perfect pairing to the reenactment and a must-visit destination for history lovers of all ages. \n📅 Plan Your Visit \nLocation: Pioneer Village • 2122 N St. Joseph St\, Gonzales TX\nTime: Saturday\, October 4 • 2:00 PM – 2:30 PM\nAdmission: $6/adults\, $3/children (ages 5–12)\nTip: Arrive early to explore the village\, shop local vendors\, and get a front-row spot \n🎖️ This reenactment is more than a performance — it’s a chance to stand on the soil where Texas history began.[/vc_column_text][vc_empty_space alter_height=”none” hide_on_desktop=”” hide_on_notebook=”” hide_on_tablet=”” hide_on_mobile=””][vc_raw_html css=””]JTVCbW9kdWxhJTIwaWQlM0QlMjI2MDM0JTIyJTVEJTBB[/vc_raw_html][vc_empty_space alter_height=”none” hide_on_desktop=”” hide_on_notebook=”” hide_on_tablet=”” hide_on_mobile=””][vc_raw_html css=””]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[/vc_raw_html][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column icons_position=”left”][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column icons_position=”left”][/vc_column][/vc_row]

No director. No problem. The music\, and the beer\, never stop.” – A very unofficial Hobo motto \n🎶 About the Band \nThe Shiner Hobo Band isn’t just a performance — it’s a living\, laughing piece of Texas music history. Born in the years following World War I\, the band was formed by returning veterans who had missed the simple joy of making music. With most family bands and dance hall groups disbanded during the war\, these young men came home and stitched something new together: patched clothes\, old instruments\, and a promise to entertain again. \nFrom the beginning\, the Hobos embraced chaos\, charm\, and community. They were known for mismatched overalls\, rowdy energy\, and a standing arrangement with their sponsor — the Spoetzl Brewery — to supply a keg of beer per performance. Music and mischief went hand in hand. By 1936\, under the plunger-wielding direction of Emmett Busch\, the Shiner Hobo Band had become a regional sensation. Crowds in Shiner\, Gonzales\, and surrounding towns couldn’t get enough of their spirited brass and button accordion sound. \nThrough the 1950s\, the Hobos continued to show up for church picnics\, parades\, and civic events — wherever joy was needed. But by the time longtime leader Curt Messer’s health began to decline\, the band slowly faded from the spotlight. \nThat all changed in 1986\, when the Hobos were reborn for the Texas Sesquicentennial. Local musicians rallied under the playful leadership of Joe Panus (and his famous toilet plunger baton)\, practicing just enough to keep up with tradition. Soon\, the band was back — with a fresh coat of paint\, a speaker-rigged school bus\, and a renewed spirit of humor and heritage. \nToday\, the Shiner Hobo Band includes up to 30 active members from all across Central and South Texas — from Schulenburg to Port Lavaca. They operate as a nonprofit\, still proudly sponsored by the Spoetzl Brewery\, and still powered by memory: every song is played without sheet music. There’s no conductor\, no setlist\, and no shortage of laughter. \nWhether they’re playing The Shiner Song\, cracking jokes mid-polka\, or just raising a cold one between verses\, the Hobos remind us that sometimes the best music comes when you throw out the rules and play from the heart. \n🎷 What to Expect on Sunday \nSunday afternoon at the Come and Take It Celebration belongs to the Hobos. From 1:00 PM to 5:00 PM\, expect wall-to-wall music\, storytelling\, crowd engagement\, and cold drinks flowing right alongside the brass. \n\nNo setlists\nNo conductor\nJust pure Texas charm and old-world flavor\n\nTheir performances are full of spontaneous laughs\, surprise solos\, and inside jokes between bandmates that somehow include the whole crowd. You’ll hear their classic theme song\, The Shiner Song\, and polkas so lively they might get you dancing on your way to the beer line. \n🍻 Plan Your Visit \n\nLocation: Beer Tent at Independent Square — shaded tables and seating available\nTime: Sunday\, October 5 • 1:00 PM to 5:00 PM\nAdmission: 100% FREE as part of the Come and Take It Celebration\nNo need to bring: Chairs\, blankets\, or anything but your good mood\n\n🎺 Whether you’re a lifelong fan or just stopping by for a beer\, this is the set you don’t want to miss.[/vc_column_text][vc_empty_space alter_height=”none” hide_on_desktop=”” hide_on_notebook=”” hide_on_tablet=”” hide_on_mobile=””][vc_raw_html css=””]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[/vc_raw_html][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column icons_position=”left”][/vc_column][/vc_row]
