📜 About the Event

Hear the muskets. Feel the cannon thunder. Witness the moment Texas stood its ground.
The annual Battle of Gonzales Reenactment brings to life the historic clash that marked the official beginning of the Texas Revolution. In October 1835, settlers in Gonzales refused to return a cannon loaned to them by the Mexican government — instead raising a handmade flag with a black star, a sketch of the cannon, and four legendary words: “Come and Take It.”

What followed was a standoff between approximately 140 Texian militia and Mexican dragoons, culminating in a pre-dawn skirmish that lasted mere hours but changed the course of history. Though the battle resulted in few casualties, its impact was immeasurable. The resolve of the Texians to resist disarmament ignited a wider rebellion, and Gonzales became known as the “Lexington of Texas” — the symbolic birthplace of Texas independence.

Through this dynamic reenactment, costumed interpreters and historical combat demonstrations recreate the drama and courage of that pivotal moment, complete with musket fire, cannon blasts, and immersive storytelling.
